Review of Anywhere but Here (1999) by Jennifer A — 19 Feb 2006
Anywhere But Here is a drama about a Mother/Daughter relationship starring Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman. Directed by Wane Wang, the story begins with the materialstic Adele (Sarandon) deciding to move from small town Wisconsin to Beverly Hills, Calfornia.
Adele's daughter Ann (Portman) is less than thrilled about the move, and can't wait to get away from her overbearing mother. Things don't work out quite as planned for Adele, as they don't end up in a fancy Beverly Hills home, but she is undeterred by all of this as she has the perfect Beverly Hills demeanor.
Mostly Ann is either frustrated at Adele, or just plain bored. The supporting cast is forgettable and doesn't add much to the very predictable storyline, so it's up to Sarandon and Portman to try and salvage the film.
Adele is the most interesting character and Sarandon does a competent job, but the much less dynamic Ann is less interesting to watch. Natalie Portman looks bored, and with this script it's understandable I guess, but it results in a less than satisfying viewing experience.
Much better films focusing on Mother/Daughter relationships exist, and I would recommend seeking one of those out instead of watching this film unless you are a diehard Sarandon or Portman fan.
