Review of Anywhere but Here (1999) by Lexie S — 15 Sep 2006
I really wanted to like this movie, so I ended up being slightly disappointed. Portman and Sarandon both do excellent jobs portraying their mother/daughter relationship, however the story was rough around the edges in so many ways.
Their extended family needed to be included more in the story or complete dropped. They were given maybe 2 big impact scenes, but they seemed useless at the end because you never got to know them. Peter, Portman's boyfriend in the movie was another character that was underdeveloped and consequently seemed to drag the movie down.
They could have easily cut 15 minutes of mother/daughter scenes and replaced it with the aforementioned characters, and then this movie would be worth a second viewing.
