Review of Anything Else (2003) by Ben M — 15 Jan 2008
Christina Ricci's role in this film is quite intriguing as her lines remind me of Stallone's role in First Blood. When Stallone escapes to the mountain, there is a montage of bad assery(I know assery is not a word), where he systematically takes down the police force.
Ricci's lines in the film are like the montage as she spits a wide range of ideas, actions, and emotions, in a phrase or two. They are a montage.. Things a girlfriend might say over time, massed together in quick sharp scenes.
It is funny because you wonder sometimes why Bigg's character stays with Ricci. Woody Allen's sense of humor and expression are vastly depicted in this film. The dialogue is a symbol of goings on cut into the format of a film.
This is a depiction of a relationship that lasts years, but the audience is tricked by the youth of the players. There is a coming of age tale within the boundaries of the film, a realization that may take a lifetime for some.
Allen's character is merely a future reflection of Biggs, where Biggs is a retrospect of Allen's past experiences.. There is a woulda-shoulda-coulda element that I found inspiring, but Allen is alone.
. Who aspires to be alone?
