Review of Any Questions for Ben? (2012) by Jay K — 20 Feb 2012
This is a very frustrating movie to rate. It starts off really well - snappy, quirky, some good laughs and good character development. It's what you'd expect from Working Dog and it looks really good.
Then the plot development stops and the whole thing slows to a long painful drawn out malaise. The laughs become sporadic, the points become laboured and the story becomes obvious and derivative. You almost expect Alex to come out with "I love him! I love him for the man he wants to be.
And I love him for the man he almost is" - except Ben isn't anything and doesn't become anything - when he does finally come to accept the obvious his big resolution amounts to nothing at all.
Sadly Rachael Taylor really can't do anything to save her own character from being an empty cliche with no substance. Oddly - the main supporting cast actually shines here but it's not enough to get me to give this a pass.
