Review of Any Given Sunday (1999) by Robert B — 23 Jan 2010
For me this is the film where Stone jumped the shark on his career. Suppossedly a critique on the Caligula excesses of the super rich sports culture the film veers off into Eraserhead like dream worlds.
There's no doubt that American culure puts WAY to much emphasis on sports stars but if the film was looking to make an honest essay of that world it really missed the endzone. The casting was lousy, the story was worse and the directing was phoned in.
There's no doubt that today's NFL is all neon and no grid iron and is completely souless. If that what STone meant to express in this movie then in that case he succeded as the film is a reflection of that.
It has no soul.
