Review of Any Given Sunday (1999) by Greg E — 21 Feb 2011
When discussing the movies I like I tend to give credit, good or bad, in this order: writer, director, animator, fluffer, actor, producer, sound guy, Quentin Tarantino (for all movies ever). Oliver Stone, as director, had a solid, if not insanely broad, story, a PERFECT cast, and the ever popular background of football to place it.
And proceeded to do...this, with it. The fact that I like this movie is in total spite of however Stone tried to direct it. The story and the cast win out even through the lightning imagery, or the chariot races overlay or the ghost fans or the over one billion song clips.
The soundtrack for this mf'r must be a quadruple album. It's like Sights and Sounds of the NFL meets One Tree Hill. It has nearly every football cliche ever created and therefore could have been the most beloved and cliched of sports movies ever (sports fans need cliches in order to survive).
But in Stones hands it is merely one just one more completely unnecessary popped-out eyeball on a field of completely unnecessary popped-out eyeballs.
