Review of Any Given Sunday (1999) by James R — 04 Feb 2014
An interesting look into the world of football. When quarterback Jack Cap (Dennis Quaid) goes down during a game it's up to third string quarterback Willie Beaman (Jamie Foxx) to come thru for the team.
Beaman soon sees what fame can do to someone and it quickly gets to his head. Al Pacino plays the head coach of the football team a fictional Miami Sharks. It features an all star supporting cast including Cameron Diaz as the young owner of the team, LL Cool J, James Woods, Jim Brown and Aaron Eckhart make up the staff and team.
The movie isn't half bad albeit it's a bit dated today. Lots of jumpy cuts, some strange images superimposed during the game (at one point during a slo mo shot of Foxx they briefly show images of a white dude jumping?) the movie runs a bit too long and as much as Al Pacinos Coach D'Amato is fiery and full of life we never get to know much about him.
It's like a lot of his sequences were edited out and we just see him calling his kids and hanging out with hookers. It's just a little too random. The sports scenes are still pretty cool, but the film runs about 25 - 30 minutes long.
Overall, sports fans should take a look and at least give it a rent!
