Review of Any Day Now (2012) by Bradley S — 25 Jun 2013
Any Day Now is a gay rights film that hits home on all bases even though it's setting is in 1979 West Cali. Just now getting on Netflix, in fact, the day of the Supreme Court ruling, significantly magnifies its sheer compassion and heartbreak.
The film boasts a magnificent performance by Alan Cumming and although seems somewhat melodramatic, it still delivers unpredictable moments that carry emotion long after the credits roll. Any Day Now is able to convey such drastic impact because it's 1979 story of a gay family adopting a mentally challenged child is not far from the truth of the here and now in the battle for civil rights of homosexuals.
That being said, I hope that one day these films will be cherished in a time where civil rights are finally equal among all American citizens, not just in media, but as a historical documentation about how the times truly have changed over the years.
