Review of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008) by Blind P — 19 Jan 2010
As a metal fan I'd give Anvil a failed grade. I care nothing for history or influence when I listen to tunes, after all, and while I don't find theirs to be completely devoid of quality I also don't find anything special to love.
On the other hand I can completely relate to the players themselves, and you'd have to be completely devoid of compassion if you watched this movie and didn't root for these underdogs to make it to their dream stage.
Regardless of whether you like their band, you have to respect them for staying dedicated and holding on to their belief.
This documentary is created as a labour of love by a fan and friend, and the circle is complete as it has given them a springboard to success that so long eluded their grasp.
There are lessons here for any artist to learn.
I only hope this doesn't spawn a wave of imitating films that serve as advertisements for people in similar situations, not that those could downgrade this quality.
I found myself watching it again right afterwards, this time listening to commentary, which I never do. I found that view perhaps more entertaining than the first.
