Review of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008) by Nicholas M — 10 Oct 2009
Easily one of the best films of the year, I don't even care really about metal music or the band's music either but these guys are my fucking heroes. One of the most fascinating, hilarious, and heart warming movies of the year.
At first when we meet Steve Kudlow and Robb Reiner it's hard not to laugh at them, they're too very kooky old Canadian rockers in a one huge metal band that they're convinced is about to make it big but we see them at their day-job delivering food to public school cafeterias and a brief stint in telemarketing.
Over the course of the film though we stay with these men and see a roadblock in the way everytime it seems their at the verge of something to at least bring them a sense of happiness and satisfaction and it's hard not to feel for them and want them to finally make it.
That these men have continued, haven't given up and continue to fight for their dreams after 30 years even when it seems like everything is against them is so incredibly inspiring. Everything about these men is pretty much right there on screen, they're up there completely bare and human, no pretenses and imperfect, but so sweet, so funny, and so real.
Even in their 50s and facing failure after failure they still have that childlike enthusiasm, love for their music and their band that is rare to even find in even those young bands astonished to have successfully made it.
It's nearly impossible to walk away from this film without a huge smile on your face. I just fucking love these guys and love this film.
