Review of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008) by Tom C — 02 Jul 2010
Documentary following Canadian metal band Anvil! Having had a taste of fame in the 80s the documentary picks up the band 20 years later still yearning for dreams of glory and stardom. You could be mistaken that this was Spinal Tap 2 when the band hit Europe for a spectacularly unsucessful tour, and anyone who has gigged will find much of it cringe-inducingly familiar.
The film nicely balances the inherent absurdity of band leader "Lips" dreams with his rather depressing realities (the band themselves really don't seem to be anything special) but his neverending optimism, underdog spirit and sometimes turbulent decades-long friendship with drummer Reiner is strangely moving and inspiring.
