Review of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008) by Phil F — 18 Aug 2011
Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a much better film than I had originally anticipated. Yes, it often plays like a real-life rendition of This is Spinal Tap, but is a much more poignant story of two lifelong Canadian friends now in their fifties, Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner, who never lost sight of their rock and roll dream.
In the early 80s, their band, Anvil, seemed destined for the big time. They played a huge festival along with what would become some of the biggest names in rock music, only to be quickly overshadowed and forgotten.
They continued to soldier on, although they have done so in relative anonymity, and have garnered little reward for their exhaustive efforts. Still, one realizes that these guys are genuine, and are not toiling away at their dream for mere financial gain.
They have a true passion for their music, and will stop at nothing to be recognized for it. This movie is a definite must see for any rock music fan, but I think that there is value in this film for everyone.
There are some truly touching moments in this film, particularly the ending. Four stars.
