Review of Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008) by Jess K — 10 Feb 2012
All struggling artists ask the same question again and again and again: at what point do I give up? Most don't have a filmmaker friend/fan/former roadie willing to document this struggle. Anvil! The Story of Anvil is as much an example of the observer effect as it is a celebration to the persistence of friendship and the artistic spirit.
While the film works in capturing the dedication and passion with which Steve and Rob continue their twenty-plus-year journey to rock stardom, it never makes a compelling argument as to why this particular band is so worthy of attention and not the thousands of others who carry on without even the secret success Anvil has achieved.
Only the most heartless won't want them to fulfill their dreams, but there remain millions of artists, some more talented, never appreciated or lucky enough to have a camera crew follow them. Who tells their story?
