Review of Antz (1998) by Mike S — 24 Mar 2015
Although this is a computer-animated film about an ant colony, it's not really for kids. It deals with themes of communism, war, revolution, and individualism that will go over younger kids' heads.
The basic plot is formulaic, but the voice talent gives it an edge you wouldn't expect. Woody Allen, Gene Hackman, Sylvester Stallone, Christopher Walken, Danny Glover, and Sharon Stone all play stock characters, but bring to them extra depth.
The script gives them just enough room to evoke all sorts of classic movie lines from the '70s through the '90s. More sophisticated than it seems.
