Review of Antwone Fisher (2002) by David F — 06 Mar 2010
A solid enough biography of the eponymous former sailor-turned-screenwriter, who as a child endured horrible abuse and neglect at the hands of his foster parents - leaving him prone to fits of rage as a young man while serving in the Navy.
Ordered to undergo counseling under the auspices of director Denzel Washington's Navy-appointed psychiatrist, he eventually comes to grips with his past by searching for his biological parents. Derek Luke brings a refreshingly natural and unaffected performance, and Washington is fine, though a bit stiff.
Although it may suffer comparisons to 'Good Will Hunting', the film is definitely worth seeing.
