Review of Antwone Fisher (2002) by Brian R — 15 Mar 2010
A deeply tender, sweet, emotional movie and Denzel Washington's filmmaking debut. Antwone Fisher is a great film and a great achivement. Washington has the power of an extraordinary talent, who can easily get filmgoers emotionally involved or moved to tears since Spielberg.
Antwone Fisher is a film I would have loved to make especially with the main character Antwone played by Derek Luke. I couldn't help it, I honestly thought I was watching myself as Luke quietly stepped out as 'Hollywood actor' into playing someone with real honesty and importance. Fisher has flaws of temper tantrums, which will be explained through the picture--Now I have to skip a bit and talk about the romance. I'm not one for romance picture but this film has one hell of a romance setting.
Joy Bryant plays as Fisher's girlfriend, and the two actors have great chemistry, Washington makes their relationship importantly special and honest and why not? Fisher needs as much love and redemption as possible. That's not all Denzel Washington plays as Fisher's shrink and it's quite clear that he is under a lot of guilt and stress, since his wife wants something they wish they both can have. The final scene is kind of dramatized, but it is nice to see lost loves come together through the families.
Washington will always by many to be a great actor but I'll always remember him as a great filmmaker, he is that good and knows how to move a camera and enhance a scene. I hope Washington will do more directorial projects in the years to come--Truly front runner in my books.
