Review of Anthropoid (2016) by Gordon M — 14 Aug 2016
A really well-crafted WW2 film that uses the assassination of Heydrich to take us into the lives of some ordinary people who make extraordinary decisions and sacrifices in order to stand up to the evil that has overtaken their world.
This is a thoughtful film that faithfully recreates a moment in a time - and I was so pleased to see that instead of the usual Hollywood-take that would've shown us card-board cutout characters and over-the-top, high-decibel special effects.
This is a film about how some humans reacted to evil and fear, presented authentically. This film didn't make me happy (war is too awful, and even killing a bad guy sometimes leads to worse outcomes), but it did make me feel a little bit of what it must have felt like to be alive in 1942, with an impossible task and an uncertain future that one had to face, scared but determined.
Bravo.
