Review of Anthropoid (2016) by Jeena C — 22 Aug 2016
My son - a World War Two buff - and I saw Anthropoid this afternoon. We expected it to be grim, and it was. Aside from a contrived and unnecessary romance between one of the assassins and a female resistance member, the movie felt about as "realistic" as the medium allows.
Afterward I found myself wondering what the point of the movie was supposed to be. Was it to celebrate Czech resistance to Nazi occupation? From that perspective, assassinating Heydrich was a colossal blunder: the ensuing reprisals were so vicious, extensive, and indiscriminate as to effectively destroy it.
Or to put it differently, terror works: is that the takeaway? As I said, grim...
