Review of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) by Sam L — 30 Jul 2018
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly take lead in this much lighter film that feels like a nice reminder of fun after the effectively depressing Avengers: Infinity War. This film would get a full 5 stars if not for one glaring issue, it's villains, well more so Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins) than Ghost, but we'll get to her in a second.
Sonny Burch is surprisingly quite common throughout Ant-Man and The Wasp then one would think, but even though he was in the film a lot, I left the screening feeling quite unfulfilled as his character was only used so we could have some cool action scenes rather than having any proper relevance to the plot, other than a single thing he does towards the end of the film that is a slight inconvenience to our dynamic duo.
Onto Ghost. I've seen a lot of squabble on the internet of people trying to decide if Ghost is a good villain, a bad villain or even a villain at all. In my opinion I think she is quite a strong villain even if some aspects of her are not fully utilized or create giant plot holes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During the film you find out something about Ghost's past which makes you think, "Why haven't we seen her in previous films like Winter Soldier if she's that good?" But these are all tiny nitpicks on the back of an incredibly enjoyable film with two great leads, some great side characters and a good villain in my opinion.
