Review of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) by Reviews F — 05 Jul 2018
Ant-Man and the Wasp is a light comeback from the dark film that was Infinity War. For the most part.
14/15 points go to the ACTING category. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly give amazing performances throughout the film. They are the highlight along with Abby Ryder Fortson. The problem with the acting is Hannah John-Kamen. She doesn't seem interested in the role of Ghost for no reason. She also doesn't seem like she IS the character, as the rest of the actors and actresses do well.
11/15 points go to the WRITING category. Marvel has written their villains well with Thanos and Killmonger, but Ghost is not the same. They put some stuff together as a backstory for her and it stinks. It is nothing compared to our other villains. The movie also has one of those mid-credits scenes that you have to watch to get the full story, and it is a bit of a letdown, as it just happens and snap. Just like that, it says that you have to see another movie to get the rest of your story. The rest if amazing, I like the rest of it a lot. I feel like there not being as dark of a tone than Infinity War made it better. Just going to say, the mid-credits scene is super dark and a bit bad for a Marvel film in comparison to the others we had this year. The post-credits scene and the blah blah blah will return is a bit dumb, too.
9/10 points go to the VISUAL EFFECTS category. The effects are amazing with the shrinking and stuff, but Ant-Man and the Wasp look fake sometimes. It's hardly noticeable, but I could just see it sometimes. The Quantum Realm looks good, too.
8/10 points go to the CHARACTERS category. The characters are built phenomenally. Except for Ghost and Janet van Dyne. As I mentioned, Ghost is not built well, and is wasted. Janet van Dyne shows up for about 25 minutes and then it is it. She's wasted. We don't see much before snap, and it's over. We just have to hope than in a sequel or something, where she comes back to kick butt.
3/5 points go to the DEVELOPMENT category. We don't get to see much from some of the characters, and questions that need to be answered are ignored. I am giving points for at least giving somewhat of development of the status of Scott's family and everyone else except for Ghost and Janet van Dyne.
3/5 points go to the ORIGINAL MUSIC SCORE category. The score is good throughout, and I like how they put in some funny moments with Scott and some songs in there. The only problem with the score is that you can't hear the music for about the whole film.
10/10 points go to the DIRECTION category. Peyton Reed directs everything well. We see that nothing is done bad in the way that the characters act. The action sequences are the best directed parts of the film. I'm glad they were done so well, even if they were all shown in the trailers.
10/10 points go to the VISUAL AND AUDIO QUALITY category. This film can be watched on any screen, including Standard and 3D and be enjoyed. The experience I had made it feel like a person should see it in Dolby Cinema or IMAX.
17/20 points go to the OVERALL CONSENSUS category. I think that this is a movie which faces flaws that it can't run from, but it is sill enjoyable and I feel like people will enjoy it for it's pleasure to watch.
Score: 85%.
Grade: B.
Side Note: Captain America: Civil War takes place before this film. You can buy Captain America: Civil War on Blu-Ray and DVD today. It is also rated PG-13 like this film.
