Review of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) by Devaughn B — 04 Jul 2018
It looks like Marvel Studios is 3 for 3 this year, because they've done it again. I need to see this film again because right now, it may be my favorite MCU sequel. Maybe that will change, but I had a BLAST. I love the first Ant-Man, and everything from that film returns here, plus some welcome additions, including new characters that can change a lot for the MCU's future, and a more complex story. I feel like this will be the unpopular opinion, but unlike how I felt about the more complex story in Sicario 2 as opposed to the original, I enjoyed Ant-Man and the Wasp's story more than the original film's. This is also an extremely funny film, so many hilarious moments from Paul Rudd and Randall Park, but of course Michael Peña's Luis stole the show on that end. That's what I've always appreciated about the Ant-Man series, the way comedy and serious, dramatic character and story beats are so flawlessly interweaved. The visual effects here are topnotch as well, more incredible de-aging CGI this time around, and the effects for the micro car chase scenes are just amazing!
Evangeline Lilly as Hope/Wasp really is the star of this film, and rightfully so. I'm so glad she can finally lead this film not only by name, but the major action sequences, and a major story beat as well. She is wonderful in this role yet again, and I hope there is a lot more of her to come.
The only possible issue I had with this film is the lack of explanations for the more complicated story points, and the use of scientific jargon, thrown at the audience to get out of actually explaining things. But this is such an enjoyable MCU film, great performances and characters, comedy, action, and story, so please check this one out ASAP.
