Review of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) by Matthew L — 07 Jul 2018
Ant-man and the Wasp has a lot of laughs and cool action and even a solid villain. However, this movie falls flat compared to its predecessor on many levels. First, this movie has not nearly as much heart as the previous film.
Its attempts to get you to care about the characters and their situation fall flat mostly due to comedic mediums and not giving a genuine heart-felt message like the first film did. Second, the plot is way too complex as there are multiple players in this movie all vying for the same prize, and by the end the viewer is dizzied by all the moving pieces.
Third, the technology in this movie is never fully explained even in a way that can be remotely understood, so when important stuff happens at the end involving the quantum realm, the viewer has no idea what is going on and is supposed to just take it for what it is.
When this occurs the technology becomes more of a cop out for those writing the script than it is just the premise of the movie. In the end, however Paul Rudd's relatable charm, Michael Pena's jokes, and the small scale family feel of the movie is just enough to keep it an enjoyable (but forgettable) summer action-comedy.
