Review of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) by Greg C — 07 Jul 2018
Finally, Laurence Fishburne and Samuel L. Jackson are in the same motion picture universe #perrywhitecrossesover. Nick Fury does not appear in this film, 'cause you know, Thanos. My assumption is that the next Avengers movie will bring back a lot of folks.
Oh, Antman and Wasp? It's good. The Marvel writers and Paul Rudd have trademark humor. It reminds me of the tone of Spiderman: Homecoming. I do question whether it might have been a better idea to have Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp) have her own stand-alone movie to establish her ability to stand up without Antman.
Ah well there are still possibilities. It hardly needs to be said that Marvel Studios got the technicals right. The visuals, the fights, the banter are all spot on. The lead child performance of Abby Ryder Fortson (Cassie) was so likeable.
There are lots of jokes here and they land well. The villains, a black market tech dealer and a tormented "super", are on the more forgettable side. However, they plus the FBI provide a reasonably challenging box for our heroes, so that it does not feel one sided.
Randall Park plays lead FBI officer Jimmy Woo, whose character's arc can continue with the more movies in the series. He is a great foil with the normal person perspective to all the craziness that is going on in this corner of the MCU.
Michael Pena is the best side kick in the MCU. Now some writer must make Fishburne (Bill Foster) and Jackson (Fury) meet.
