Review of Ant-Man (2015) by Nicky M — 23 Jan 2016
The main thing that stuck out for me is how confused this film is. At times, the film tries to be like the quirky Scott Pilgrim vs The World but clearly it loses its nerve and ends up appeasing the Marvel brand in a generically bland way. I did laugh a number of times- and it did have one of the most unique train crashes seen in a movie involving Thomas the Tank Engine like you have never seen him- but the script was often very tedious.
It has to be said that the scenes involving Ant-Man's transition between ant and human were very well done. However, Paul Rudd was at times cringe-worthy and certainly not on the level of wit provided by Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man. Moreover, the in-crowd references to other Marvel films were a little overdone.
Its watchable, but not much more than that.
