Review of Ant-Man (2015) by Griff C — 04 Oct 2017
Having seen Avengers: Age of Ultron just a few months prior in 2015, Ant-Man came as a breath of fresh air for this Marvel fan. I wrote much more extensively in my Age of Ultron review that that film, though enjoyable, felt bloated in places and long at times.
Not the case with Ant-Man at all! Having just rewatched it right before this writing, I had forgotten how concise it is and how well the movie flows. For myself, this film did not feel like it was almost two hours long; rather, the time flew by.
As far as the content of the movie goes, it really is an enjoyable experience. The cast is great and the moments of comedy hit. However, those compliments can describe many of Marvel Studios' productions.
Where I found the most entertainment was in the heist. Starting the year prior, it seemed that Marvel was branching their superhero movies out into different genres, and this was their first stab at a heist film.
As such a movie, it is executed so well. The only notable flaw I find here is with the villain - not with Corey Stoll's performance as Darren Cross, but rather that his motivations are fairly unexplored aside from generally being greedy and power-mad.
However, that flaw is easy to ignore. Overall, you do not need to be a diehard Marvel fan to enjoy this one, as it can be a highly entertaining time for all.
