Review of Ant-Man (2015) by Mazmorrero47 — 16 Jul 2015
It 's very refreshing to see a superhero movie that is so self-contained and with such imaginative sequences. The plot isn't innovative or clever by any means, but it works thanks to Peyton Reed's eye for the bizarre and going back and forth between big and small perspectives, and the charisma brought by Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas.
All of them play each other in a very engaging manner. What avoided Ant-Man from reaching its full potential was mostly the villain, who was just another evil businessman stereotype, and didn't give the talented Corey Stoll a lot to do.
It was basically a recycled version of Iron Man's Obadiah Stane. Bobby Cannavale was underused as well in a very thankless role, and Michael Peña's jokes were contrived and sometimes juvenile and annoying.
I would say Ant-Man is like Guardians of the Galaxy in the way that it's a very standard story elevated by its charming cast and the heart given by its director.
