Review of Another Year (2010) by Joseph C — 12 Feb 2011
I really enjoyed this movie! Ruth Sheen and Lesley Manville have been robbed of Oscar nominations. Sheen's quiet, contemplative manners are contrasted by Manville's loud, drunken histrionics and the two together create a vivacity to behold.
This is a slow, but magnetic movie full of spirit and vigor. Focused on the mundane reality of a small group of middle-aged Brits over the course of a year, the movie may be an existential critique of human activity, but it also celebrates the delights of life's simple diversions.
Writer/director Mike Leigh rarely disappoints and this is one of his best.
