Review of Another Year (2010) by Jj M — 04 Apr 2011
Only 4 stars for me for this Mike Leigh film. Thats unusual, I normally love his stuff especially Happy Go lucky. But Another year just didnt pull at the heartstrings as much as his films can sometimes do. As much as this is a real lifer and just the kind of flick I normally devour I didnt get fully into it and the ending left a lot to be desired really.
That being said, Another year is certainly not without merit - I gave it four stars for fucks sake it must have done something right.
Jim Broadbent is cracking as usual. He gets better with age and is probably doing nothing more than being himself here but for me thats enough, I liked him a lot.
The directing is good. Its Mike Leigh and thats what we expect but theres no shocks here, theres no big twist or nothing so perhaps he doesnt have anything to show off about.
Lesley Manville is very watchable too, there is an unspoken event from which Mary and Gerri try not to talk about, thats an important moment in the progress from Summer to Fall and then Winter.
I could watch Mike Leigh TV if it had a channel but this wouldnt be primetime for me.
