Review of Another Year (2010) by Peter A — 30 Apr 2011
Another study in lonliness and isolation from Mike Leigh made real by great performances from Jim Broadbent and Lesley Manville. Although its vintage Leigh, its nothing we haven't seen before and doesn't come near Secrtets and Lies for characterisation and a great script.
With a slow burning build up you are expecting a cresendo but the tale just fizzles out of energy in the final third and you are left wondering what the point of it all is. I think the connecting factor is the embraces that take place between all of the characters.
The giving and receiving and what they mean to each person Watch and you'll see what I mean.
