Review of Another Earth (2011) by Antonella A — 08 Mar 2012
Once in awhile a movie comes around that you go: "Wow never thought of that plot!" Another Earth is so original, the minute I saw the trailer I went looking for movie times to see it. Sadly I didn't get to watch it until 6 months later. What I got was one of the most touching, insightful, and deep films about human character that I have ever seen.
The film is shot with what looks like a camera you'd get to film a project in high school with, and yet how it's filmed really adds to the film. We feel like we're right behind this girl every scene without it feeling like a found footage movie. Also, the talent that Brit Marling has is astounding. She not only acted amazingly in this film, she actually co-wrote it. The subtle acting and touching dialogue really makes this film a winner. The other Earth may add a great concept, but it's just an original way to say: "People need second chances". Whoever, came up with this concept is pure genius.
You may need to watch the film a few times to pick up on a few things, including the ending, but once you get it, the film will resonate in your mind for a long time.
Once you look over the scientific flaws, Another Earth is a contemporary masterpiece!
