Review of Another Earth (2011) by Ryan H — 29 Mar 2012
Based on the trailers and synopsis this seemed like a strong indie film that I would enjoy. After the first ten minutes you realize this isn't the film as was advertised. This film follows the story of a young woman who while drunk driving causes an accident claiming the life of a man's wife and child, after she is released from Prison she sets out to begin a new life while making amends for her actions.
All of this is in the midst of the discovery of a second earth that is looming closer to our planet than the moon. The film focuses on the woman's desire to start a new life on this second earth but facing the reality that running away may not be the answer.
The films story and performances are decent enough, however, the cinematography is so uneven it's distracting. The cinematographer seems like he never chooses a style to shoot in and it's enough to take the viewer out of the film.
The other issue is that you follow this woman who seemingly has no redeeming qualities, and despite this we are asked to empathize. I didn't hate the movie and I appreciate indie style filming but many of the choices made in the marketing and production caused me to find myself counting the minutes until the end.
I'd say if you aren't a fan of extreme indie dramas then you will probably want to pass on this film.
