Review of Another Earth (2011) by Pouyan S — 01 Feb 2013
Starring and co-written by Brit Marling, who also starred in and co-write the equally impressive The Sound of My Voice, Another Earth opens with a set-up familiar to anyone who watches horror films: a well-intentioned but inebriated young person inadvertently causes tragedy while driving drunk.
Not quite an adult in the eyes of the law, the young woman spends time in jail for manslaugher, but her identity is never revealed to the press or the surviving victim of the crash, a composer whose wife and child died on that fateful evening.
All this time, another seemingly identical version of Earth has appeared on the horizon. This other Earth, and the plotline we obseve, explore the nature of the identity and fate we experience and question how we and the world might have differed if events had unfolded differently.
A moving, profound, bizarre, and sorrowful yet also joyful meditation upon how seemingly unimportant decisions can define our lives and our identities, Another Earth is an unforgettable experience that will lead you to question how you and your life might have played out differently.
