Review of Another Earth (2011) by Valerie P — 25 Sep 2013
This unique story, brought to us by Mike Cahill, slowly unwound itself into a deeply complex and captivating tale.
Completely unlike your average sci-fi, this film's main focus is the character relationships that are developing alongside the unbelievable appearance of a twin Earth in the sky. The second Earth is just a backdrop for a great deal of the movie, only to reveal itself as an incredibly imaginative plot-point near the end.
I found Brit Marling's acting to be genuinely spot-on. She seems to be making her mark on Hollywood these days. Her expressions, her movements, and mannerisms were all so incredibly real. She makes you feel for her character, who has spent much of her youth in prison. Cahill has the audience crying out for justice, and somewhere along the plot's winding pathway, he seems to deliver.
I pondered this film for several days; always a good sign. I also wished I had shared it with my husband, as I believe one of those good, post-film conversations could have come out of it.
