Review of Another Earth (2011) by Andy S — 09 Jan 2012
Another Earth and Melancholia in the same year? Two great films about planets hovering too close for comfort to our own. AE, however, to me, feels more personal, more moving and more intimate. Following the heartbreaking tale of Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling) thrown against EARTH 2 in the background is truly a fascinating journey.
Visuals melt together against a sonic bed of electronic- airy music score that makes things feel almost spiritually intertwined. (Great score by the group, Fall on your Sword). I cannot say enough about Brit Marling in this film, not only as it's protagonist but also it's writer.
I fell in love with her and her un-ending sadness. There is a mind blowing Sci-Fi tone to this film that brilliantly (and ever so subtly) speaks to the heavy and sorrowful drama about loss, grief, guilt and ultimately renewal.
In all.. it's hard to put words to this but I've already watched it twice in a 24 period, so I am definitely diggin it. I don't think I will be able to shake this for awhile. Love it.
