Review of Anonymous (2011) by Janice P — 06 Nov 2011
This is a movie that is so striking on a lot of levels. Now I understand where the critics are coming from regarding what is generally acceptable by historian and expert standards, but this is precisely why film is a beautifully malleable medium.
It does not do any damage, in my humble opinion, to present historical facts through another perspective. Rather, I believe it enriches it. Like with "Anonymous" for instance, John Orloff's poignant screenplay, albeit being based solely upon a strong theory, really challenges the audience to examine more closely the backstory behind the world's greatest, timeless stories.
And Roland Emmerich's presentation is just fantastic! I think this is his best work ever. Most of all, what really made it a very meaningful and substantial film is its ensemble of such magnificent actors! Regardless of what the critics say I don't think Shakespeare is rolling in his grave right now.
On the contrary.
