Review of Anonymous (2011) by Isuru B — 16 Jan 2012
This was unexpectedly one of my favorite films of 2011. Who thought that this film was actually going to be good? Roland Emmerich directing a period-piece set in Elizabethan London about William Shakespeare being a fraud? I certainly set my expectations a little low, but I was still interested.
This was undeniably one of the best films about Shakespeare, in my opinion. Even if you're not swayed by this film into believing that Shakespeare was a fraud, the story is good enough in its own right to keep you entertained throughout.
I thought the acting was good, especially Rhys Ifans as Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford and the man who according to this film was the real author of the writings credited to William Shakespeare.
The political intrigue and the fascinating twists made this much better than I expected, and the visual effects used to recreate Elizabethan London looked great. The atmosphere of the movie really brought you into the time.
I may be in the minority for having liked this film, but what can I say? I thought it was great.
