Review of Anon (2018) by Wayne K — 09 May 2018
I really enjoyed the first half of Anon. I wasn't bothered by the slow pacing because I was fully engrossed in the world it was trying to create and the dilemma which faces our hero, subtly played by Clive Owen.
The film tackles issues of censorship and privacy, and I found myself in awe of the smart points it makes about both. The idea of our minds all being connected isn't anything new, but they way it was explored and the look of the system itself kept me interested.
Unfortunately, much of the good will is eroded by the second half, which devolves into a much less interesting cat and mouse game, and just before it's over a completely nonsensical twist comes in to completely spoil the fun.
It's also in the second half that the slack pacing really becomes an issue, and the film has run out of things to say. I'm glad I seen it, and if the second half had been as good as the first then this would be easily the best film I've seen this year so far.
The first half swims, the second half sinks, but taken altogether it manages to just keep its head above the water.
