Review of Anomalisa (2015) by Nick D — 01 Jan 2016
The continuing 'wow' factor of the sheer virtuosity of stop-motion animation technique as the story unfolds has its own treasurehouse of pleasures, but regrettably, this was not enough for me to love-love-love this movie, mainly because the story is so meh.
It's like too much of Kaufman's manic creative energy went into the how part of the storytelling, leaving less for the what and why of the story. That said, it's still a crazy miracle that my disbelief was suspended, sometimes for minutes at a time, until I was pulled out of the interaction between characters by an awkward movement or effect.
I found this especially true of the closeups, which were remarkable.
