Review of Anomalisa (2015) by Matt B — 10 Jan 2016
Anomalisa is a flat-out masterpiece until the very end. It's a rushed finale that ends completely out of nowhere and left me incredibly annoyed. Is it supposed to end out of nowhere? Maybe. Who knows. You interpret it for yourself.
Nevertheless, Charlie Kaufman's stop-motion animation comedy/drama is absolutely wonderful. As strange and uncomfortable it is to watch puppets have sex, the movie is moving and relatable for anyone who's bored with the mundanity of their lives. David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh (so lovely here), and Tom Noonan lead spectacular voices to the characters.
I would have preferred a better ending, but Anomalisa is certainly a thing of beauty.
