Review of Anomalisa (2015) by Darren M — 13 Jan 2016
I'm an admirer of Kaufman. "Adaptation" was brilliant and is one of my favorite films ever. However, his latest film, which took two years to film, is a complete and utter FAILURE on all levels. All the characters are pathetic and detestable. How much money to they pay the one critic who called it "the most human film of the year?" That is a lie. The film is the most non-human and worst film of the year. It is the WORST animated film I've ever viewed in my life. The bad lead character never changes. He goes from bad to worse. The dialogue is awful and meaningless. The story is meaningless. That's if there IS even a story.
After starting off pretty well, the film plummets quickly, never to return. And suddenly it ends. I can't believe anyone would waste two years of their lives filming the stop-action of this empty animated porno film. Yes, the characters have graphic sex, and with zero style or substance. Not since Blue Is The Warmest Color has there been such an extended gratuitous sex scene in a non-porn film. At least Blue had a great film around the sex. The sex scene with the puppets was actually the most interesting part, if you can imagine that.
STAY AWAY. The filmmaker has lost his mind. Save your money. You will be gravely disappointed. Proceed at your own peril. Definitely the WORST film of 2015 and beyond. It seems that "critics" these days (at least the sorry bunch represented on RT) are calling terrible movies great, and good movies bad. It's the opposite of what it should be. We are in strange times for sure, when films like The Revenant, The Big Short, Madding Crowd, etc scores much lower than truly awful films like Anomalisa, on a website claiming to collect legitimate critical opinions. RT has long ago lost all credibility. The bunch of critics they compile are simply out of their minds. They call this film "thought-provoking" and "introspective." That is not true. Stop believing what these disingenuous morons are telling us. It's time to stop believing these loser critics. We should be doing our own research when deciding whether or not to see a certain film. That research should NEVER include a visit to RT anymore.
