Review of Anomalisa (2015) by Elizabeth H — 01 Feb 2016

A very different film. Anomalisa is a stop motion/animated/puppeteer film that is very adult in nature (it's rated R for a reason). The movie follows a man named Michael Stone (David Thewlis) who is on a business trip to Cincinnati to make a speech.

He is a lonely man and the craziest thing is that everyone he talks to man or woman has the same voice (Tom Noonan). That is until he meets Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) a sales rep that has some old demons of her own that she eventually shares with Michael.

Michael struggles to understand what love truly means and also what it means to really connect with someone. The animation is fantastic. The movements of the puppets looks very real and there's quite a few close ups that are very detailed.

Overall, this wasn't just my cup of tea. I found the movie to move too slow at times and the ending just wasn't satisfying for me leaving me to piece together the overall meaning. This won't be for everyone and I highly encourage you to check the trailer before watching in case this might spark an interest with you (more than likely only film buffs will enjoy this one!).
