Unbelievable. I am heart broken upon watching Anomalisa, but also incredulously impressed. There's a lot of buzz that this film is an exploration of loneliness, mundanity, and love being the shining light in the darkness.

But the more you see this movie, the more it's clear that this is an exploration of psychosis and schizophrenia. What's really beautiful, though, is that the self-defeating, unforgivably damaging mental illness our 'protagonist' experiences is a result of the heightened reality bubble he's lived in for so long.

As a writer of a (could it *be* a stronger indictment of the scam that is corporate culture?) best-selling Customer Service book catered toward aspiring middle managers, he has been adored unconditionally since his heyday.

A heyday which was clearly once handsome & charismatic, and whose now-flabby form has not adjusted yet to the diminished returns of the attention he's granted. And when he has it, goddamn it he takes advantage of it.

I'm destroyed in the same way I was after having watched The Room. Which I feel is a compliment of the highest order.
