Review of Anomalisa (2015) by David R — 15 Feb 2016
I love Charlie Kaufman. He's one of the few people in Hollywood who creates extremely unique and intelligent films. Films that go completely against your standard formula, leaving you with an unforgettable experience. Walking in to Anomalisa, I was beyond excited. I have a huge appreciation for stop-motion animation and, as stated previously, I adore Charlie Kaufman. Well, I'm very glad to say that Anomalisa is one of the most unique and mind-blowing films I've seen in years!
The voice acting all around is excellent. David Thewlis plays Michael Stone brilliantly, and lends a very realistic voice. Jennifer Jason Leigh is also very good, but the real stand-out here is Tom Noonan, who plays the voice of EVERY OTHER CHARACTER. He's fantastic, and often very funny.
I can't rave about the animation in Anomalisa enough. It is gorgeous and the sets look incredibly realistic. The characters are detailed and display such emotion that it makes you believe that they are real. The writing is also excellent, with some surprisingly humorous moments blended brilliantly with dramatic and emotional dialogue.
I really do not want to spoil any aspects of Anomalisa. I will not reveal the plot or any other factors that would ruin the experience. Trust me, you are going to want to go into this film knowing next to nothing. However, Anomalisa is definitely not for everyone. It's surreal, unique, and very bizarre, making most general audiences uncomfortable or confused. I, for one, was neither of these. I was invested in the plot, characters, and the metaphors placed here.
Overall, Anomalisa is one of the few films released in 2015 that I could call "an experience". It is intelligent, beautiful, realistic, and is one of the best films released in the past five years. See it!
RATING: 9.9/10.
