Review of Anomalisa (2015) by Junel K — 18 Jun 2017
Anomalisa is a strange and memorable movie that reminded me in style and tone to Lost In Translation. What is astonishing is that the the very touching and human tale is told using stop-motion animation.
The story is of an English businessman, Michael, living in the US and staying in an anonymous hotel as he is going to speak at a conference. He's having something of personal mid-life crisis and seems to be at odds with the pace of the world and the people he is involved with.
He meets a couple of women who are attending the conference and spends the night with one of them, thinking he's found a soulmate but soon realises that she is as unfulfilling to him as everyone else.
It is a slight and simple tale that is effectively told, the puppets making the whole story seem more human. There is one very neat trick used to demonstrate the social isolation of Michael from the people around him in that all the characters, apart from Michael and Lisa, the woman with whom he has the affair, are given the same voice.
This unusual idea took me a moment or two to catch onto but it was a simple and effective ploy that made Lisa stand out. It is a tender, introspective and quiet movie that I found both moving and thought provoking.
