Review of Annihilation (2018) by Parker W — 03 Mar 2018
Is this movie worth seeing? That is always the main question. The answer is most definitely yes. I actually enjoyed this movie quite a bit more than the likes of 'Arrival" and other recent sci-fi movies.
The world within the shimmer is beautiful and mind bending, and one of my few complaints is that I wish we saw more of it. The few glimpses we get of the creatures and ecosystems within are mesmerizing and I was always wanting to see more.
Maybe in a possible sequel? My other complaint is that this movie starting slow and the script was awkward and quite awful at times. The lines and acting seemed very forced and faked at the beginning, but I'd say it definitely got better as the movie went on.
Dr. Ventress(Jennifer Jason Leigh) was one of my most hated characters Ive watched in a movie in many years. Her character seemed totally fake and the acting was extremely forced. Maybe she was just doing the best she could with the terrible starting script.
Aside from a few flaws like those, I enjoyed the hell out of this movie. The ending was superb and left you walking away with a great sense of wonder as to what really happened (not in the sense of confusion, I didnt find the plot hard to follow like a lot of people did.
But just how its open to examination as to what exactly happened and what will happen). The sound effects and score were very well executed and gave me an amazing and intriguing feeling similar to witnessing/hearing "Interstellar" for the first time.
If you're looking for a beautiful, mind bending sci-fi movie, I highly recommend this movie to you.
