Review of Annihilation (2018) by Max D — 26 Apr 2018
I do not understand why this movie has such high reviews. My friends and I went into this thinking that it would be great from reviews and the trailer but we realized halfway through that we all thought it was terrible and very poorly done. The "science" in this science fiction is nonsensical and not explained at all. The scenes that are supposed to be impactful to the watcher are either so quick and poorly framed that you hardly pick up on it and resultingly don't care or you just don't care because they aren't good scenes. The jump scares are pretty much all shown in the trailer and not scary at all. The acting is quite awful which is surprising from the cast who we liked in other things they've done.
There is also stuff that is added and just doesn't matter, which I won't spoil, but it was trying to pack a bunch of information and storylines that did not help the plot or make us more involved with the characters which resulted in us all laughing by the end of the movie at how bad it was.
Overall, the characters are very poorly developed, the story does not hook you at all, the CGI was not good contrary to what other reviews say, the science was nonsense and not developed enough to get us into the possibilities that it could be and was not well explained.
I definitely do not recommend this movie. If you are debating whether to watch it or not, choose another movie.
