Review of Annihilation (2018) by Frances H — 02 Nov 2018
1. Loved the creativity and suspense. My favorite parts were the ones combining the beauty of nature and the scary biological possibilities. I enjoyed those more than the LSD hallucination-like parts.
2. BUT, real physicians, biologists and physicists would have been helpful advisors in solidifying your frame. Unless we are all doomed and automatically excluded from the bio sci fi target audience.
3. There is a way to achieve the goals of political correctness without distracting the viewer into multitasking away from the plot. Our minds know the demographics of the world subconsciously and when you disturb the ratios, you call attention to the seasoning and the meat/plot loses its place. Like when the physicist tells the biologist something that doesn't make sense as if it is a super smart thing, or the incongruity of the hox gene statement with what actually happens a few scenes later. I think it's ironic that despite these efforts, a media Asian group is complaining.
4. You could have made it inspiring and chose to make it depressing with infidelity and only psychologically tormented individuals. The violence was too grotesque as well.
With even a single virtuous inspiring character, less violence, and a more solidified hypothesis I would have given it a 5.
Thank you for the experience.
