Review of Annihilation (2018) by Dan R — 29 Sep 2018
I completely disagree with Paramount wanting to reedit it because it was too intellectual and complicated. It wasn't. It was silly and predictable, got lost in it's visual effects and scenes designed to get it an R rating (sex and gore.).
It could have been great - It had a female dominated cast of strong heroic leads portrayed by an outstanding ensemble. The characters were complex and nuanced, but the movie tossed much of that compelling talent aside, throwing characters away like Kleenex.
It was a box office bomb because it came out as Science fiction, but was really Fantasy in which the science was not the least bit credible; just words like distortion of DNA and refraction of everything, not just light. Come on.
Plot resolution? Don't get your hopes up, just try to enjoy the pretty pictures and the wonderful acting. Someday we may see an upbeat sci-fi film, but the title is a clue. Anyone else sit through the whole thing?
Two hours I will never see again.
