Review of Annihilation (2018) by Jonathan G — 15 Mar 2018
Alex Garland tries to tap into the essence of Kubrick's ending of 2001 a Space Oddesy. Stunning visuals, loud viseral audio, and questions that go unanswered. We want to follow Natalie Portman characte's journey to find her own answers to what has happened to her husband that just shows up after being away for a year. Mystery surrounds a military mission into the glimmer. A ecosystem that is created after a meteor crashes into a lighthouse. Portman and a group of women scientist take thier turn into the glimmer to try to find answeres. If you are just getting into cerebral sci-fi films then this semi spoon feed flick is for you.
The issues that I have with this film is the flash back cut sceens do not add any substance to the story as a whole. Every step of the way we where literally told what is happening in the shimmer...zero mistery. Until the lighthouse ending that makes this films climax worth the wait. Garland's older films out preform his newest attempt on the big screen.
