Review of Annihilation (2018) by Ayman A — 29 Mar 2018
Annihilation is a tense, uneasy, mystery that unnerves the audience and gives them a story to ponder. The plot centers around Natalie Portman's character who goes into the Shimmer to find out what happened to her husband.
She's joined by several other women as they face the horror and mystery inside. The plot is solid but takes awhile to get going. The Flashbacks are unnecessary and slow the story down. But once it picks up, it turns gruesome and begins to be terrifying, creating a sense of dread that sticks with you even after it's over.
Visually, this movie is stunning, from the mutated creatures to the environment surrounding the characters. The score is also a stand out and is very haunting. Acting wise, most of them do solid jobs with Portman giving a great performance.
And as the story comes to a close, it is mostly satisfying and validated what came before it. Overall, Annihilation is a well directed sci-fi film with some genuinely scary moments and stunning visuals though it runs a little too long and slow at times.
